If the air was as crisp as these unexpected evergreens are tall...
If a thick covering of pine needles was a blanket of freshly fallen snow...
If the warm waters of the Pacific weren't chuckling at our silliness as we pretended to be shivering from the cold...
We could have been drifting through a deep New England forest on a long winter's walk.

That one Sunday afternoon when we hiked along Hau`ula Loop Trail and found ourselves rambling through a tropical pine forest, atop a volcanic mountain ridge, on O'ahu's North Shore.
