on stalking jack johnson...

posted on: 6.14.2012

Just a little craft and a recipe I came up with while, well, you know, while waiting for Jack Johnson to call.

'Cause, that's what any good... "worth their salt"... "takes their obsession seriously"... kind of a stalker girl would do guys, right?

Oh, you guys this is just the very silliest of things, this little exaggerated preoccupation I seem to have convinced myself a good Hawaii blogger should have.  You know I'm really not the stalker type, if I do say so myself.  Fame is fine, I'm sure, it's just... I find ordinary everyday people just so way more interesting and cool and worthy of thorough devotion and study than most any celebrity.

Howe-v-e-r, that being true and all... there is that little serendipitous encounter with Surfer{the bar}, I posted about it here, where Jack supposedly hangs out, and where I will likely never go as it seems somewhere between twenty five and kid number two it became so entirely clear that a "movie night in" trumps a twenty one and over type establishment any night.
Well then, if you would please observe exhibit number two, the Coastal Living article delivered right to my very own P.O. Box.   Perhaps it is not so much I who is stalking him, ya know?
Well, and then there's this little darling right here,

a wreath made of authentic Hawaii driftwood and flotsam and jetsam and well, just so happens I live very near a beach littered with just those very things-- coincidence, I am beginning to think not.

And so, I am going to allow this little obsession to abide just a moment or two longer.

(And also, frankly, just between you and the really, truly sane me who has no overwhelming obsession with Jacky-- I'm pretty sure he'd just die if I called him Jacky, but never to his face, only just here, with you, okay?  Well, between us, if Jacky did in fact invite me over to dine I'd be there in two shakes of a lamb's tail, (whatever that means) and of course I'd have you there with me).

And I'd bring this...

See, 'cause it is fashioned in the very image of the one he has, already in his home, they'd be like, twinnies, or something, right?

And I'd bring this whole wheat goodness, made with flax seed, too.

And Jack would be like, "what, you made this?!" and I'd go, "oh, it was nothing" and then I'd wink at you standing right beside me and we'd play it off like, as if, we hadn't known for weeks... months... years... that that was the very thing we'd make to take to Jack's house.  And Charlie would roll his eyes behind us, 'cause he's not a girl, no sir, and he'd find us just plain silly.

But, we wouldn't be bothered 'cause we'd be at Jack's house and we'd go on down to the beach to see after the children who would be frolicking in the setting sun light.  And Kim, that's Jack's real life wife, well, she'd be there somewhere too and we'd let her in on our creepy stalking secrets and she'd giggle with us 'cause I'm sure she'd be cool like that, right?

Right.

live sweet,

An Easy Eco-friendly Driftwood Wreath:

Supplies.

Approximately fifty pieces of driftwood
(various lengths of small to medium diameter)

One heavy weight paper plate
(I used a Chinet lunch plate)

A Hot glue gun

Hot glue sticks

Step One.  Clean off drift wood of any loose sand or debris.

Step Two.  Cut a hole in the center of the paper plate to desired size.

Step Three.  Invert plate and glue a single layer of driftwood to the underside of the plate along the lip.
(Because the driftwood is heavy you really want to be sure the glue is dry before handling.  I worked with two or three pieces at a time gluing one and holding it firmly in place for a few seconds before gluing the next and then going back to press the previous ones in place again)

Step Four.  Glue a second ring on top of the first, covering the inner ring of the plate.
(I used shorter more whimsical pieces of driftwood for this top ring and I really liked the three dimensional effect that came about as a result)

I really do like my lines clean, but you could decorate further as you please.  How cute would that be with some sea shells or starfish or both.

Whole wheat Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

Ingredients

2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter
1/4 cup flax seed
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 large eggs
2 cups ( 12 ounce package) semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.  Grease a 15x10 inch jelly roll pan

Combine flour, flax seed, baking soda and salt in a small bowl.  Beat butter, sugar and vanilla in a large bowl.  Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.  Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.  Spread in prepared pan.

Bake 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

And really guys if we stalked Jack here I'm sure he'd really love us for it, or at least I'd love ya big huge for it.

  3. Ok so, we were at Apple store at Ala Moana one day. There were these 2 beautiful little boys playing on the computer tables where the kids play. They were playing with my 2 daughters. Father walks up, he and I have small talk about our kids. He walks a short distance away, comes back and so forth. I keep telling myself, he looks really familiar. Then I ask my husband, is that Jack Johnson? He said yeah I think so. So when he came back by us and his boys I asked him if he was and he said yes. =) All I have known of him was the Curious George movie song. So I told him I loved it and congratulated him on it. Duh! I did not realize he was already a musician and a well known one at that till later. I felt dumb. lol. Anyways, he is so down to earth, like it's not even funny... very warm and loving and kind and very humble. He was wearing shorts tshirt and slippers. Funny thing is his wife, his gorgeous wife, was dressed up really nice like a celebrity. They were going to dinner with friends at that steak restaurant I think downstairs of Macy's area, I forget what it's called. I found it funny because of how he was dressed. :) I will never forget that day, he was so nice. =)

    1. love it. I've actually heard he's ridiculously mellow and humble and pretty much always rockin' the slippahs no matter what, and also if I were famous and talented I think I'd wear "whatever the hey I wanted" and that would be that-- wouldn't that be lovely?

Aloha to you and your girls.

  4. Very entertaining and fun read, Nicole. . . Makes me wish I lived near the beach. . . I live in NC about an hour away from the coast. . . sigh . . . Love the driftwood wreath (will have to keep that in mind for our trip to SC) and of course always appreciate a healthier cookie option!

    1. I love NC. I actually have launched many a grand scheme to move there and live a sweet southernish life. My brother in law played for the panthers for a bit and so I spent a summer in Charlotte during college-- loved it.

  7. Hi there! Found you through Saturday Show and Tell and i had to comment because 1) I love the driftwood wreath... Ive been trying to think of cool things to do with natural elements my daughter loves to collect, and this is a fabulous idea. And second, I needed to say Aloha once I saw you were a Hawaiian blogger. I was blessed to live in Hawaii for five years as a young woman and I miss it still to this day. So many mahalos for this great post. :)
